From the archives…

Thank you to my uncle Hani who unearthed this beautiful gem of a photo.

Setting: My hometown of Amman in Jordan.
Period: Specifically, this is a photo of the 1st Circle in Amman, one of the busiest areas of the capital. The photograph was likely captured sometime in the late 70’s to early ’80s.

Why I love this photo:

  1. “The Book Corner” to the left belonged to my grandparents, and stayed in our family for some 25-30 years.
  2. The People’s Car, the VW Beetle, was seemingly the People’s car in Jordan as well. You can see three of them parked against the sidewalk.
  3. The Traffic cop guiding traffic. 35+ years later and the picture hasn’t changed much. This still remains arguably one of the most congested areas in town, needing far too many traffic officers to organize flow.
  4. The photo was taken during a massive downpour, not a very common sight for one of the 10 most water impoverished countries in the world.
